Concrete cracks in Townsville mostly because of the ground it sits on. Before we get to the local causes, it helps to know which cracks matter. Fine hairline cracks that appear as fresh concrete cures are normal shrinkage. They are usually cosmetic and do not affect the strength of the slab. That is also why a good concreter cuts control joints into the surface: they give the slab a planned, straight line to crack along as it shrinks, instead of a random crack wandering across the middle of your driveway.
The cracks that are worth worrying about are the wide ones, the stepped ones where one side has lifted above the other, and any crack that keeps opening up over the seasons. Those usually point to something moving underneath, which in Townsville almost always comes back to the ground.
Reactive Ross River clay. Through the older flats and the low ground near the river, at Railway Estate, Oonoonba, Idalia and across the central suburbs, the black-soil clay is reactive. It takes on water and swells during the wet, then dries out and shrinks back hard through the long dry. A slab poured straight onto that clay with no base treatment gets pushed up and dropped again with the seasons, and eventually it cracks. This is the single most common reason driveways and paths fail here, and it is entirely preventable with the right base.
The extreme wet/dry swing of the dry tropics. Townsville does not get a gentle spread of rain through the year. It gets a concentrated monsoon wet from roughly December to March and then months of hot, dry weather. That swing drives the clay movement above to its extremes, and it also stresses the concrete itself: fresh slabs poured in the fierce build-up heat can dry out too fast and craze if curing is not managed, while the sodden ground of the wet season is the worst time to be building a base at all.
Salt-driven spalling near the coast. Close to the water at North Ward, the Strand and Bushland Beach, the air carries salt. Salt does not crack concrete on its own, but it soaks in and reaches the reinforcing steel, and as that steel rusts it expands and pushes the concrete off from the inside. The result is spalling: flakes and cracks breaking away at the surface, usually over a rusting bar. Coastal blocks need the steel kept well away from the salt.
Cyclone country and real loads. The whole city sits in cyclonic wind Region C. A slab that ties a structure down, a shed, a patio, a carport, carries wind and uplift loads that a slab in a calmer climate never sees, and under-built footings or edges will crack under them. Driveways carry vehicle loads too, and a slab that is too thin or under-reinforced for what drives on it will crack regardless of the ground.

Yes. Fine hairline shrinkage cracks are normal as concrete cures and are usually cosmetic. You build for the ground. As the steel corrodes it expands and pushes the concrete off, which shows up as spalling and cracking at the surface. The defence is enough cover over the steel and a coastal-suitable mix, so the salt cannot reach the reinforcement.
